Former Republican governor and presidential candidate Jeb Bush told a conservative gathering here in South Carolina that for him to become the next president he needed a strong level of support from them and claimed some in the Democratic Party will black votes with free stuff. Thomas Jefferson’s “Epilogue” and “Notes” on the state of Virginia in 1781 came to mind. Jefferson, one of America’s most celebrated heroes, in a glaring and charged pronouncement, acknowledged his guilt and fear with regard to the legacy of slavery.
