(Editor’s note: the writer submitted this letter to the editor prior to Gov. Nikki Haley’s signing of legislation Thursday to remove the Confederate battle flag from the S.C. State House grounds, and the flag’s removal on Friday.) Regarding the Stars and Bars battle-flag controversy, here’s an option: What if all South Carolinians were given opportunity to vote in a referendum-type setting on a proposal which could unify us on this issue? The question might read, “Would you support a collection/group of War Memorials and the appropriate flag of the Era under which South Carolinians fought and died in combat, in defense of the cause of that time, beginning with the Revolutionary War continuing up to the present?
