Hall of Fame inducts noted rider Bassett The late Carroll Bassett, one of the all-time great steeplechase riders and trainers, was inducted into the Racing Hall of Fame this (Monday) morning in ceremonies at Saratoga Springs, N.Y. Mr. Bassett, who was Camden’s first resident steeplechase rider and who was instrumental in the founding of both The Carolina Cup and The Colonial Cup steeplechase programs, died early this year at his home at Montpelier Station, Va. Mr. Bassett was the nation’s leading steeplechase rider with most races won in the years 1932, 1933, 1934 and 1935. He rode Mrs. Marion DuPont Scott’s famed “Battleship” to all of his American victories… Mandy Marshall third in Little SC Pageant Mandy Marshall, 12, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Dan Marshall of Camden, was second runner-up in the Little Miss South Carolina Pageant held in Columbia this week.
