Sun shines on River Rat Regatta The annual River Rat Regatta Saturday attracted one of its biggest crowds ever in the eight-year history of the wet and wild tubing race down the Wateree. Regatta co-chairman Van Johnson said there were 276 paid entrants in the seven mile course down the river from the Wateree Dam to the Howard F. Speaks Bridge, including a sizeable number of out-of-town participants. At the conclusion of the race trophies were presented to the following winners: • First place four-person racing team -- Flipper (Tommy Anderson) • Second place four-person racing team -- Pine Grove • First place two-person racing team -- Oars • Oldest tuber -- Henry Cost, 69 • Most people on a float -- Lugoff Automotive (31 tubers). • Sexiest female tuber -- The Patterson Dancers with entry, Can’t Touch That. • Sexist male tuber -- Bertram Rantin aboard Neighbors Express • Most colorful float -- Yellow Jackets • Most spirited float -- Langley Asphalt with entry, Asphalt Aliens. • Most original float -- Middle Age Crazies • Ugliest float -- Big One. • “Keep the Wateree Clean” award -- Kinney float A warm welcome Campbell University in Buies Creek, N.C., recently held its second session of new student orientation.
