U.S. Sen. Strom Thurmond was on hand Monday to present Cogsdill Tool with the Presidential “E” Award for excellence in exporting. The award, from the U.S. Department of Commerce, is awarded to companies which show sustained growth in exporting goods, according to Cogsdill Marketing Manager Fred Ogburn III. Exports comprise 18 percent of the sales of the Lugoff firm, which is about five times the industry average. Cogsdill produces precision tools for the metal-working industry. **** John Carmichael Jr., warden of the Wateree River Correctional Institute bordering Kershaw and Sumter counties, was recently awarded the Buffalo statuette of the S.C. Wildlife Federation for his work in preserving the state’s waterfowl population along the 7,000 acres of land at the state institution.
