Van Dervort Awards announced by judge, Sally Ashley Sally Ashley, who formerly taught art at Lugoff-Elgin Middle School, returned to Camden, March 5, to judge the Van Dervort Student Art Show at the Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County. The show was open to all middle and high school students in Kershaw County…the entering artists could choose any subject… …The 1981 winners of the Van Dervort awards in the high school division are: Mike Faircloth of Camden High, student of Marlene McGee, … first place…; Theresa Stephens of North Central High, student of Barbara Tucker, second place…; and Frank T. Jones, III, of Camden High… third place … Winners in the middle school division are: Joyce Pate, North Central eighth grader, student of Mrs. Tucker; Claude Truesdale, Camden Middle School, student of Ruth Randall; and Elaine Bishop, sixth grader at Camden Middle School, student of Mary Jane Martin… Drill teams take honors North Central High School and Lugoff-Elgin High School won second place trophies in different drill team categories in the annual “Tiger Drill Meet” March 7 at Clemson University’s Littlejohn Coliseum. Sponsored by the Department of Military Science, twenty-eight South Carolina high schools competed in the JROTC drill.
