Tanne Traywick, age 79, of Brevard, N.C., died peacefully on Dec. 26, 2023, at Elizabeth House Hospice of Flat Rock following a long, heroic battle against cancer, surrounded by her family and loved ones.
Tanne was born Aug. 12, 1944, to Virginia Nettles and Clarence Melvin Brabham and she grew up in Bamberg, S.C., with her parents and sisters, Cantey and Ginger, and various ponies and horses and cousins. She graduated from Bamberg High School and earned a master’s degree in education from the University of South Carolina. In 1966, Tanne married Thomas (Tom) Tatum Traywick Jr. They had two children, Tatum and Oliver. Tanne taught in S.C. public schools until her retirement in June 2004.
Tanne retired to Brevard and invited Tom along. She volunteered with Free Rein Center for Therapeutic Riding and Education, inspired by her lifelong love of riding. She was a Master Gardener and enjoyed organic and sustainable practices in gardening. She loved music, hiking, traveling, barbecue, beer and spending time with her granddaughters. In 2014, in recognition of her 70th birthday, Tanne and her dear friend, Lee, walked El Camino de Santiago (the Way of St. James), a six-week, 500-mile pilgrimage from southern France across northern Spain, culminating at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.
Tanne is survived by her beloved husband of almost 60 years, Tom; son, Tatum Traywick; daughter, Oliver Greer (Jody); and two granddaughters, Susannah and Nolly. Tanne is also survived by her sister, Cantey Carpenter (Bill); and nieces and nephews. Tanne’s family honored her wishes for a green burial and a graveside service was held at Bethlehem Cemetery in the Low Country of South Carolina on Dec. 28, 2023. A celebration of Tanne’s life is planned for the spring. Memorial gifts might be made to Free Rein Center, P.O. Box 1325, Brevard, NC 28712, or to the charity of your choice.
