In a game 12 years in the making, the North Central softball team snapped a 12-year skid against rival Andrew Jackson by knocking off the visiting Lady Volunteers, 11-2, last Tuesday night in Boonetown.
The Lady Knights grabbed the early lead, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning thanks to a series of walks and errors by the visitors. The score held up over the next few frames as NC was able to get base hits, but was unable to push runners across the plate.
NC’s Halla Danzy and Addie Bittner would get things going in the bottom of the fifth as they brought in a run to get the bats going for NC. Emily Rumple would add one of her own as the Knights led, 8-0, going into the sixth inning.
NC freshman right-hander McKenzie Melton would lose her perfect game in the sixth after she gave up a walk to lead off the inning. The Lady Vols would score two runs in the sixth but that would be the last of their scoring output.
Danzy hit a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth to put the game out of reach and Melton would drive in the final run as NC improved to 3-1 in the region, a game behind Buford.
NC jayvees erupt in 14-5 win over AJ: The Lady Knights’ jayvee team spotted AJ a 5-0 lead before scoring 14 unanswered runs in a lightning-shortened game on Tuesday.
An Andrew Jackson home run and great small ball play would put the Lady Vols on top by a 5-0 count. A Josie Jackson strikeout and two deep fly balls to Brooke Coates would strand a Lady Vol runner at third base in the third.
In the bottom of the third, the NC bats caught fire. A Serenity Williams double knocked in three runs while a Dani Claire Payne ground out but brought in the game-tying run shortly after. The Knights would mount a two-out rally to pad the lead, coming via walks and RBIs off the bats of McKinley Horton, Williams and Payne.
The win gave the Lady Knights a 4-1-1 record.
